Specialized Therapy for Lymphedema
Specialized therapy for Lymphedema and other swelling related conditions has been available to patients in the United States for only 15-20 years. Physicians are becoming more aware of who can benefit from this therapy. New Life Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine has a specially trained Lymphedema therapist, Karen Neff to care for those struggling with swelling concerns.
While statistics vary, upper extremity Lymphedema will occur in 30-50% of women who have undergone axillary node dissection during cancer treatment. The initial onset of Lymphedema can occur immediately post-operatively or many years later. Lower extremity Lymphedema can occur in patients who have undergone surgery or radiation to treat prostate, colon, gynecologic cancers or those who have had any surgery involving the abdominal cavity. Disruption of the lymphatics via repeated joint sprains or surgeries such as total knee replacement, liposuction, vein harvesting for graphs are a few of the many examples of interventions that can result in long term swelling.
A common cause of leg swelling seen by the therapist at New Life Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine is venous insufficiency. Varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis (blood clot) may also result in swelling that is uncontrolled by support hose.
Treatment includes a variety of modalities, based on the patient’s particular needs. The most common treatment approach includes manual lymphatic massage and compression bandaging. This treatment is covered by most insurances as well as Medicare and Medicaid. A physician’s referral is required for treatment. Please also feel free to call with any questions.
