Frequently Asked Questions
Is physical therapy just exercises? I exercise already.
Physical therapy aims to restore normal function to the musculoskeletal system of the individual. A functional problem, such as inability to reach because of shoulder pain, may be a result of dysfunction in the nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. The physical therapist will make a physical therapy diagnosis to determine where the pain is coming from and what structures in dysfunction may be contributing to the pain. The therapist will then use a variety of treatments to restore function to the shoulder which may include joint mobilization/manipulation, stretching, strengthening, modalities, and soft tissue mobilization. A cookbook approach of do these exercises if your shoulder hurts is not physical therapy.
